Sensory Messy Play: Jelly!

20141013_133235

Lizzie and I were trying to work out what food and snacks she wanted to consume the other day and she has a good taste of various things from Cauliflower and Cheese to Yogurt and Fruit Cocktail, we also added some strawberry jelly to the party and it was a whole new sensation in her mouth and not well received, so rather than binning it and being truly wasteful, we decided it would be fun to tip it up into her walker tray and see what she made of exploring it with her hands – THIS was way more fun!

Sensory Play – Flour

This was like MAGIC today, so much quiet time and easy to clean up afterwards too. Lizzie was absolutely enamored by the feel of the flour between her fingers and a reasonable amount of it ended up in her mouth…as usual!

All you need is flour and if you want to change the texture, add some water. Lizzie has had a lot of experience with wet and cold textures, fluids, cornflour and water goo, paint…so figured it was time for some dry material to get stuck into.

Fabric Printing

20141009_123100

This is quite possibly my favourite activity we’ve done to date and it was fairly mess free and provided a whole range of new textures and experiences. We have a big box full of off-cut fabric pieces of all kinds of materials, patterns, colours and textures and I decided to grab a piece, cut a rough canvas out and give it to Lizzie to paint on.

Friday Fun-Time.

20141003_113604

The Creation Station – Baby Discovery Class is VERY popular and I feel quite lucky we have a spot each week because it’s always busy, but fun, lively, noisy and stimulating for little minds. Every week Lizzie goes, a few moments out the door after the class and she’s out like a light!

Rachel is the leader of this particular class and she’s just lovely and keen to make a fuss of all the children and I can’t fault her, she’s always willing to help me out a little more because I really struggle to get down on the floor to let Lizzie play with the other babies and explore the sensory bag or do floor messy play, so often Lizzie will go for a play for a few moments with her whilst I sit close by and I’m really grateful, so THANK YOU RACHEL! ❤

Testing, Testing!

Today I went to test out my hips to see just how they would hold up “returning to normal routine” as suggested by the surgeon. Well, not too bad actually. They didn’t enjoy the sudden stops and starts of the bus, nor too much standing around, but altogether they appear to be somewhat better than how they were, so let’s hope this is something that will continue for a wee while!

Lizzie and I took a wee trip to the shops, we needed to grab some baking powder for a cake I’m going to bake this weekend and a few other odds and ends as well as pick up her prescription of Gaviscon for Infants for her reflux issues (which was way overdue thanks to some messing around by GP and Pharmacy systems – ugh!) We have it now, so back to every feed at last 🙂

Sensory Play!

Today a very lovely, generous friend stopped by for a few moments to drop off a package of items for my daughter – There were 5 books and a beautiful set of Rope Lights which flash and dim and do all manner of eye catching, visually stimulating things to amuse babies, toddlers and children alike! So very helpful today after a bad night last night with my hips, Lizzie not sleeping well and James picking up a stomach virus, we’re all a little beat and cranky today.

Friday Fun-day!

20140926_113128

Wow! What a day, I’m beat and so is Lizzie. Today was CREATION STATION DAY and we were so excited to be back after missing our second week due to illness. Lizzie enjoyed it much more this time too, possibly because she is really developing her grabby hands and pincer grasp 🙂 Each class opens with a welcome song and the leader comes around the say hello to everyone individually and once that’s over, she opens a huge furry bag of sensory goodies for the babies to explore. I really want to be able to get on the floor with Lizzie, but until she’s able to sit up reliably without falling over or crawling, it’s not easy for me to do because of my sore and stiff knees and hips, so she sits on my knee in the circle and has items handed to her; it would be nice to let her get in among it all and choose her own sensory items though.

Sensory Play – Texture.

20140924_123820

Besides the craft activity we did today, I also engaged Lizzie in a little Sensory time. Babies and Toddlers are notorious for loving to play with baby wipes and tissue packs, pulling them all out and putting them everywhere. A way to address this and keep your precious tissues and wipes away from twiddly, curious fingers, is to get an old tissue box (or any smallish box and cut a hole in it!), get strips of fabric or scarves of varying colours and textures and put them in the box!

Autumn Nature Collage Craft!

Lizzie and I got busy this afternoon whilst James did some drilling and hammering and all that manly stuff, we started by having a look and feel of the items we collected on our walk this morning – Nature Sensory is a great way to teach words, colours, textures and keep your baby and toddler interested in the world. As we were meandering home on our walk a couple of crafts came to mind that we could do together 🙂 So that was the plan for the items after she finished fondling them!

Wander in the Woods

It’s a balmy day out there today, overcast and muggy, but reasonable for walking the intrepid hounds and going for a stroll in the woods as a family. We try to fit as much in as we can on weekends because weekdays are all work and little play for James and we’re usually beat by the time we get Lizzie down for the night we manage to do very little. Weekends: The world is our oyster!
